| "I have always loved to draw or paint the human figure, even as a small child. My paintings are inspired by friends, family, or passing acquaintances, caught in a moment of reflection or interaction, unaware and unposed. I paint from memory. I once had a cat (who died years ago of old age). He was crabby wicked and hilarious. Shockingly, he loved small children and would follow them everywhere and tolerate any kind of behavior from them. Now he insists on popping up in my paintings...The women I paint are all ages, even up to about sixty. Since I have known them for so many years, they often appear much younger...that is how I see them, both past and present, all at once." Born in Minnesota, Gockley attended the University of Minnesota and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She also lived in Europe for two years where she traveled extensively in the Netherlands, France and Germany. She visited many museums where she found inspiration in the works of Picasso, Matisse and Chagall. The works Gockley appreciated and studied in museums throughout Europe and the United States profoundly influenced her painting techniques. The artist describes her technique: "My larger works are painted in oil and wax applied mostly with a palette knife. I love the unruliness of oil paint and the surprised and accidents that it brings. I have only a vague idea of what I'm going to do when I begin a painting and am always surprised at how it turns out. The smaller works are drawn with oil pastel. I love the immediacy and spontaneity that comes with this medium." Jeanne's paintings are a combination of beautifully textured surfaces and luminescent layers of color. She always creates her work with great affection for her subjects. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
